Stewart Families of Montgomery County, Indiana
(a work in process, errors are probable)

My interest is the family of Martha L Stewart who was born May 08, 1827 in Indiana, and who married Alexander Whiteley on August 24, 1847 in Montgomery County, Indiana. It was the search for Martha's parents which resulted in the impetus for this article. Martha was a daughter of Moses and Hannah Stewart, her name mentioned in a settlement of Moses' estate. Martha and Alexander lived in Jackson twp, Boone Co., Indiana, very close to many of the families listed immediately below. They moved to Tama County, Iowa in the early half of the 1860s, an area where other Stewart family members also located for a time. Martha (Stewart) Whiteley gives her parents birth place in Kentucky, so this article focuses on the Stewarts of the Montgomery County area who may have come from Kentucky to Indiana as early as the 1820s.

Family of Joseph and Charity Stewart
The first early Stewart family dealt with here was that of Charity Stewart who is listed at age (60-69) in the 1830 Montgomery County census. Her household included a male, age (20-29), another male, age (15-19), and a female aged (30-39). She disappears from the 1840 Montgomery County census, but there are indications from various records that she was Charity Smith who married Joseph Stewart on September 22, 1792 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.

A note from the Stewart Clan Magazine (November 1951, Vol. XXIX), mentions that "Joseph Stewart, born about 1770 in Pennsylvania, married Sep. 22, 1792, Charity Smith in Bourbon (probably now Nicholas) county, KY. He bought Feb. 20, 1804, of Richard Young and wife Mary of Woodford county 81 acres of land on the waters of Indian creek in Nicholas county. He bought Mar. 9, 1814, of Alexander and John Brown 10 acres adjoining the land whereon he lived on the waters of Indian creek, adjoining Abraham Miller. There may have been some change in the boundary line between Nicholas and Harrison counties, for Joseph and his wife Charity were of Harrison county when they sold Sep. 19, 1825, to Abner Vanhook 93 acres of land on Indian creek in Harrison county, adjoining Miller's land. This family seems to have moved at this time to Montgomery county, Indiana. There is one child of Joseph and Charity named in a History of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in a biographical sketch of his grand-son Joseph Norris Stewart (born Apr. 15, 1829). This was John Stewart (born c. 1795) who married Mary Enlow on Mar. 24, 1818; John being a soldier in the war of 1812."

Joseph Stewart, of Harrison Co., Kentucky, purchased acreage in Township 19N, Range 3W of Montgomery Co., Indiana. The Original Entry Record Book indicate these transactions during October 1825, with land patents granted for the same lands in April 1826. It is shortly after this time that a probate is recorded for Joseph Stewart of Montgomery County, apparently leaving a widow Charity. Other early land reords in the same region of Montgomery County give a hint to some of the children of Joseph & Charity. Names mentioned include John, Joseph, Aaron, Moses, Allen and David Stewart, among others. Plotting some of the early 1820s and 1830s land patents for these Stewarts, who were centered in northern Walnut and southern Frankin townships (image at left), reveals a close proximity of their farm lands. Two early Montgomery County, Indiana deeds help to verify many of the children of Joseph and Charity, as well as the first names of their spouses.

A deed dated 5 Nov 1832 (Deed Book 3, p 219) mentions JOHN STEWART and POLLY his wife, JOSEPH STEWART and BETSY his wife, AARON STEWART and SARAH his wife, MOSES STEWART and HANNAH his wife, ISAAC STEWART and SALLY his wife, MARY STEWART, ALLEN STEWART, DAVID STEWART, to WILLIAM STEWART, NE ¼ Sec 25 Twp 19 Range 3, for $1250, Montgomery Co., Ind. adjoining Garret Wilson. Heirs of JOSEPH STEWART, dec'd. (note: land belonging to Joseph Stewart Sr.).

Another deed dated 28 Sept 1833 (Deed Book, 3 p 329) mentions WILLIAM STEWART, RHODA STEWART, JOSEPH STEWART, ELIZABETH STEWART, AARON STEWART, SARY STEWART, ALLEN STEWART, CATHERINE STEWART, POLLY STEWART, MOSES STEWART, HANNAH STEWART, ISAAC STEWART, SALLY STEWART, DAVID STEWART, MILLY STEWART, JOHN STEWART, MARY STEWART, all of Montgomery County, Indiana to John Cowan of Tippecanoe Co, Ann Cumberland, Frederick Moore, Harvey Applegate, Enoch Richardson all of Montgomery Co., Gabriel Trullinger of Fountain County. Polly Cowan, dec'd heirs of, Warren Co., Ohio., E ½ NW ¼ Sec 35 Twp 19. (note: land belonging to Joseph Stewart of Harrison Co., Kentucky, per his 1826 land patent).

What seems apparent is the Stewart families mentioned above were children of Joseph and Charity (Smith) Stewart. Various Stewart familes are found living in subsequent decades not only in Franklin and Walnut townships of Montgomery County, but also across the border in neighboring Jackson and Jefferson townships in Boone County. The children of Joseph and Charity will be dealt with immediatley below.

The first of Joseph & Charity's children dealt with here is that of Moses Stewart, born June 10, 1804 in Kentucky and who died April 29, 1863 in or near Walnut township. Montgomery Co., Indiana. He is buried at Pisgah Cemetery in this township. Moses appears in the records with an April 23, 1829 Montgomery Co., Indiana land patent for 80 acres in the E½ of the SE quarter of Section 14, Township 18N, Range 3W. Moses shows up in the 1830 Montgomery Co. census with a household enumerated as (1-1-0-1-0-0-0 1-0-0-0-1-0-0). In the 1840 census for Franklin township Moses' household is enumerated as (1-0-1-1-0-1 1-2-1-0-1), and in 1850 Walnut township, Moses is listed at age 45, born in Kentucky, with wife Margaret (age 45,TN), and apparent children Charles T (20), Ann M (19), Mary C (16), James A (14), Elizabeth (10), Moses (8), John D (6), Joseph (4), Hannah (2), and Permelia (7/12) - all children born in Indiana.

A marriage record for Bourbon County, Kentucky, dated June 15, 1824, seems to indicate that Moses Stewart first married a Hannah Holly (Halley). The name Hannah is given in the obituary of James Allen Stewart (September 06, 1835 - February 21, 1923), who is noted to have been a "son of Moses and Hannah Stewart and [who] was born in Walnut township where he spent his entire life." James A. Stewart is noted in Moses' 1850 household, and James Allen Stewart is buried at Pisgah Cemetery. After the apparent death of Hannah, Moses Stewart remarried on June 18, 1838 in Montgomery Co., Indiana to Margaret Nicely. Moses and Margaret are listed together in both the 1850 and 1860 census records for Walnut township.

Moses died in 1863 and in his estate record [Volume 19, page 397] his eldest son William H Stewart is listed as administrator, and other children (heirs of legal age) are mentioned in administrative papers, including J.A. Stewart, Elizabeth Whiteley, Mary C Fulwider, ?Charles? Stewart, Martha L Whiteley, John Stewart, and Moses Stewart.. William H's family is found listed next to his father Moses in the 1860 census. From available records Moses Stewart's immediate family is constructed below:

The next of Joseph & Charity's children dealt with here is that of John Stewart. In H.W. Beckwith's History of Montgomery County, IN, 1881, it mentions that in 1828 John, Moses and Joseph Stewart took out patents for land in the county. In the 1830 Montgomery County census, living near Joseph Stewart, John's household is enumerated as (1-2-0-1-0-1 0-2-0-0-0-1). Living near Moses Stewart in the 1840 census for Franklin twp, Montgomery Co., IN are John Stewart (age 40-49) with a large family including a female (age 40-49), 2 males (15-19), 1 male (10-14), 2 males (5-9), 1 male (<5), 1 female (15-19), 1 female (5-9), and 2 females (<5).

John Stewart appears to be the one who married Mary Enlow in Nicholas Co., Kentucky on March 24, 1818. Mary (September 09, 1798 - May 09, 1842) is buried at Old Salem Cemetery in Franklin township, and she is mentioned in the 1845 Montgomery Co., Indiana will of her father Jesse Enlow, citing "the part I intended to give to my daughter Mary Stewart, I give to her daughter Eleanor Stewart and her son Jesse Stewart." Left with a large family, John appears to have remarried to a Mary McGregg, their Montgomery Co., Indiana marriage recorded December 22, 1842. In the 1850 census for Brown township, Montgomery Co., Indiana, John's apparent household appears as John Stewart (56,KY), Mary (54,VA), William (16,IN), John J W (11,IN), Susan F McGrigg (17,IN), Samantha J White (22,KY), Jemima Stewart (14,IN). John and Mary also appear in Brown township in the 1860 census, and cemetery records for Freedom Cemetery in that township include the death of John Stewart on "July 14, 1862, at age 67y10m1d"; as well as the record of Mary Stewart, born November 15, 1795, died March 02, 1878, "age 82y3m17d, wife of John". The following is a possible descendant tree constructed below for John Stewart.

Another of Joseph & Charity's children dealt with here is that of Joseph Stewart. Joseph is mentioned in connection with Moses and John, taking out a land patent about 1828. There are a number of land patents taken out in this time frame for the name Joseph Stewart, including one dated April 20, 1826 for a Joseph Stewart of Harrison Co., Kentucky. A number of other patents appear shortly after this date for land in Franklin and Walnut townships. In the 1830 census for Montgomery County is a family of Joseph Stewart (age 20-29), including a female (20-29), 1 female (<5), 2 males (5-9), and 1 male (<5). In 1840 Franklin township, the family of Joseph Stuart is enumerated as (0-1-1-2-0-0-1 1-1-1-0-0-1).

The 1850 mortality schedule tells us that a Joseph Stewart, age 47, born in Kentucky, died of Fever after 20 days, in District 76, Montgomery County, Indiana. In 1850 Franklin township, his surviving family appears as Elizabeth Stewart (age 47, born in KY), Sally A (22), Thomas (20), James L (18), Henrietta (15), Eliza (11), Aaron H (8), Elijah W (5), and Robert J (age 1) - all the children born in Indiana. The fact this is Joseph's family is confirmed in the Guardian's Docket of Montgomery County, Indiana dated April 16, 1853, which lists Elizabeth Stewart and children James L., Henerietta, Eliza J, Elijah, Aaron H, and Robert, minor heirs of Joseph Stewart, deceased.

From the above information Joseph appears to be the one who married Elizabeth (Betsy) Wilson on December 09, 1822 in Harrison Co., Kentucky. Elizabeth is buried at Old Salem Cemetery in Franklin township, her stone reading " Died July 24, 1883. age 79y9m19d, wife of Joseph". From available records, the following tree for Joseph and Elizabeth is constructed below.

The next of Joseph & Charity's children dealt with here was that of William Stewart. In the 1830 Montgomery County census a William Stewart and family are enumerated as (1-0-0-0-0-1 2-0-0-1). In the 1840 census for Franklin twp, Montgomery Co., Indiana William Stuart's family is enumerated: 0-1-1-0-0-0-1-0-0 1-1-1-2-0-1-0-0-0. For both of these censuses, William's near neighbor was Peter Lame. Peter Lame's neighbor in the 1850 Franklin township included the family of William Stewart (age 57, born in KY), Rhoda (44,KY), Nancy (25,IN), George (22), Mary (20), Daniel (15), Ann M? (11), Minerva (10), Samuel (7), Thomas (5) and James (3). The same family is also found in the 1860 Franklin township census.

The family above may be that of William Stewart who married Rhoda Burks on September 22, 1821 in Ripley Co., Indiana. The family is constructed from available Montgomery County, and neighboring Boone County, Indiana records as:

The next of Joseph & Charity's children dealt with here was that of Aaron S Stewart, who had a land patent dated 1/3/1832 in Walnut twp, Montgomery Co., Indiana. This land was near to that of John and Joseph Stewart in south Franklin township. He may be the Aaron Stewart in the 1830 Montgomery Co., Indiana census who was living by the families of John, Joseph, and William Stewart., and whose family is enumerated as Aaron Stewart (age 20-29), female (age 20-29), and two females (<5). He appears to be the Aaron who married Sally Brockman on June 28, 1827 in Montgomery County. Sally Stewart is mentioned in the will of her father Andrew Brockman, Andrew buried in 1837 at Shiloh Cemetery in Union township, Montgomery Co., Indiana. Sally apparently died in her thirties. Unfortunately, Aaron Stewart is not found in the 1840 census for Montgomery County, although there are indications he moved to Putnam County, Indiana, and had remarried about 1840. He is perhaps the Aaron S Stewart who died at age 53 on April 29, 1856, and who is buried at at old Greencastle Cemetery in neighboring Putnam County.

Another child family of Joseph & Charity was Isaac M Stewart, of Walnut township, Montgomery Co., Indiana. In 1840 Isaac's young family is enumerated as (1100010... 1100010...). In 1850 Walnut township the family appears as Isaac M Stewart ( age 44, born in KY), Sally (43,OH), Urias S (17, IN), Louisa J (16), Polly (13,IN), Nathan J (11), John E (10,IN), Elizabeth (8), Isaac N (6), Sally (5), Charity E (4), William R (8 1/2). Isaac appears to be the one who married Sally Ann Morgan on December 04, 1831 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Isaac and Sally's young daughter Charity is buried at Old Salem Cemetery in Franklin township. Isaac moved his family to Henderson County, Illinois before 1860, two of his sons serving and dying in Illinois Infantry Regiments during the Civil War. An Isaac M Stewart married an Elizabeth Stewart in Montgomery County on September 3 1863, perhaps this was the same Isaac.

Another son of Joseph & Charity included that of Allen G Stewart. His named is mentioned as an original land owner in Franklin township history. He had two land patents dated December 1832, and shortly after appears to have moved from the county. There is a hint that Allen moved back to Harrison Co., Kentucky for a time, then to Hamilton Co., Indiana, before reappearing as A. G. Stewart in the 1874 Montgomery County People's Guide, in Walnut township, which notes he originally settled in Montgomery County in 1825. Allen died in 1876 and is buried at Pisgah Cemetery. In the 1880 census for Walnut township, his family appears as widowed Catherine D Stewart (age 73, born in KY, born of VA parents), listed as mother-in-law in the HH of Gilbert (36, NC, of NC parents) and Mary E (45, IN, of KY parents) Gray. Members of this family, along with Allen Stewart (born about 1809 Kentucky), appear in the 1870 census for Hamilton County, Indiana. Both Allen G Stewart and his wife Catherine (Waits) Stewart are buried at Pisgah Cemetery in Walnut township.

The last child of Joseph & Charity to be discussed was that of David Stewart, who had a land patent in Montgomery County in January 1831. He may be the David who married Milly Wilson on November 18, 1832 in Montgomery County. A David Stewart of Montgomery County is also cited with an 1834 land patent in neighboring Boone County. In 1840 Hendricksburg, Walnut township, Montgomery Co., Indiana is a household which includes David Stewart (age 20-29), a female (20-29), and a male (<5). By 1850 David seems to disappear from Montgomery County, although there is a hint that David and Milly may have moved to Brown Co., Illinois for a time. His later whereabouts is unknown (to his author).

Further Stewart connections

Family of Charles and Sally Stewart
Another early family of the Mongomery County was that of Charles Stewart. Charles had married Sarah (Sally) B Maxwell on April 20, 1820 in Warren County, Kentucky. His family appears in the 1830 census for Montgomery County as Charles Stewart (age 30-39), female (30-39), 2 females (5-9), a female (<5), and a male (<5). In a guardians court record dated November 1, 1830, Charles Stuart is named acting guardian for Mary E Stuart, age 10; and Sarah J Stuart, age 8, who were heirs at law of James Maxwell. James Maxwell was the father of Sarah who left property for her children in his will.
Charles Stewart died in 1835 Montgomery County, as indicated in another guardian's court record date November 9, 1835. In that document the heirs of Charles Stewart, deceased, were placed under a Guardian named Dennis Ball. The children named in the document included Mary E (age 14), Sarah J (12), Anna Maria (7), James A (5), and Harriet (4). Other guardian's court records continue to mention the heirs of Charles Stewart, deceased, and in 1850 Wayne township, we find Sarah B Stewart (age 51, born in Viginia) living with her son James A.

Extended family of John and Mary Elizabeth Stewart
Yet another Stewart family connection in Montgomery County, Indiana included a few of the descendants of John Preston Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Bagley, who were married February 15, 1810 in Knox Co., Kentucky, and lived in nearby Hendricks County. This included John & Mary's daughter Susan and her husband Preston Pennington, who are buried at Ladoga Cemetery in Clark township. The Montgomery County connection also included some of the members of the family of John & Mary's son Hiram Bagley Stewart, who married Nancy Parks. The wife of Hiram & Nancy's son Moses Stewart, that is, Martha Susannah Davidson, is also buried at Ladoga Cemetery in Clark township. Most of Moses & Martha's children married in Montgomery County, and some lived and were also buried in Montgomery County, including William V., Bert, and Art Stewart. In addition, many of the children of Hiram & Nancy's son William Preston Stewart, were married in Montgomery County. William Preston's eldest son James P Stewart, and his wife Rosa M Douglass, are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Union township. Hiram & Nancy's daughter Elizabeth and her husband Spencer Riggle are buried at Ladoga Cemetery in Clark township.

Family of William and Susannah Stewart
Still another early Stewart family member in Montgomery County was William Stewart. William Stewart, from Kentucky, died August 28, 1838 in Mongomery County, at 32y8d, and he is buried in Finley Chapel Cemetery in Union township, along with his wife Susannah. Susannah (Susan) Stewart and her young family are found in the 1840 Union township census. A Guardian's Docket of November 17, 1843, mentions her as Susannah Stewart, and the heirs of William Stewart, deceased, are listed as John McKendree Stewart, age 16; Ann, age 15; Elizabeth M, age 13; Sarah C, age 8; and William M, age 5. Susan and her daughter Sarah are found in the 1850 Union township census. Susannah died January 26, 1857 at age 45. Two of the daughters appear to have married into the Oliver family.

Family of Samuel and Sally Stewart
Another early Stewart family member in Montgomery County was Samuel C Stewart. Samuel, born about 1804 in Pennsylvania, married Sally Scott on February 2, 1827 in Montgomery County, and his family is listed in the 1830 census. Samuel C. Stewart had land patents dated 6/6/1832 and 3/18/1837 in Franklin township. By 1840 his family seems to disappear from Montgomery County. The are indications that Samuel moved his family to Iowa for a time, and he and Sally are later found in California.

Family of Matthew and Eliza Stewart
Another early Stewart conection in Montgomery County was Matthew Stewart. Matthew, born about 1809 in Pennsylvania. appears to have married Eliza Potts on September 29, 1832 in Montgomery County. Their family is found farming across the border in Tippecanoe County in 1840 and 1850, before being found living in Union township, Montgomery County according to the 1860 census. The family appears to have relocated to Laclede Co., Missouri where Eliza and her two sons James J. and William E. were found in 1870. In 1880, brothers James and William Stewart were listed together in Franklin, Laclede Co., Missouri.
