Joseph's obituary appears in the Missouri Valley Times, dated March 17, 1885 (page 7). It is transcribed below:
MOHAT - In Boomer township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, on Monday March 7th 1887, Joseph Mohat, age 80 years. The deceased was born in Marcells, France, in 1807, came to America at an early day, and has been a citizen of Boomer township since 1856.
He was a man of fine character, highly respected by all who knew him, and died in the faith of the Catholic Church, of which he had been a leading member. He died surrounded by his family, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Honey Creek, Rev. Father Moran conducting the solemn funeral ceremony. (end obit.)
According to family history, Joseph Mohatt was born in 1807 in the Territoire de Belfort, Franche-Comté (haut-Rhin), France region of France. He was the son of Nicholas Mouhat and Marie Josephine Poëte, who imigrated to the area of West Monroe, Oswego County, New York at an early date. This was an area referred to as 'Little France', and it was near here that Joseph met and married his wife Mary Anne Piguet/Piquet about 1834. Mary Anne was a daughter François (Francis) Xavier Piguet/Piquet and Jeanne (Jane) Baptist Rigaud, who had also brought their family from the Territoire de Belfort area of France and settled in Oswego Co., NY at an early date.
All of Joseph and Mary Anne's 12 known children were born in the Little France region in New York, and shortly after the birth of the youngest child, made the trek west to Iowa. Joseph Mohat is listed among the first trustees of Boomer township in Pottawattamie County, which was constituted on June 8, 1858. The family is noted in the 1860 census in Boomer township farming in this area of northern Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and it was here that Joseph and Mary Anne spent the remainder of their lives. They were both buried in St Bridget's Cemetery, a rural Catholic cemetery in Boomer township.
