Jean Baptiste Tamisier (John Tamisiea) was the immigrant ancestor of the vast majority of Tamisiea and Tamiesie families in America. John did not write his own story but abstracts from the biographies of his children and grandchildren, other historical documents, and oral reports from descendants, help shed some light on the story of John's life. The dates may differ but the sense of the story remains the same. There are many variations of the surname in the records. In America Tamisier was spelled the way it originally sounded (tam-uh-see-uh).
The basic story is as follows. Jean Tamisier was born 7 November 1798 in the de la Creuse, Limousin region of France. He emigrated between 1825 and 1827. He settled near Syracuse, New York. He married Frances Piguet (or Piquet) about 1830 in New York. Frances was born 23 December 1807 near Belfort, haut-Rhin, France, the oldest daughter of Frances Xavier Piguet (or Piquet) and Jeanne Baptist Rigaud. This family emigrated in 1827 from France. John and Frances had a total of thirteen children (based on one biography), all were born in New York, most likely Oswego County, except for son Alexander who was born in Iowa. John may have worked on the salt mines in Onondaga County when he first arrived in America. In the 1850 US Federal Census he was listed as a farmer living in West Monroe, Hastings Township, Oswego County, NY, his wife Francis and nine of his children were enumerated with him. His real estate was estimated at $500. Many of the French families who had immigrated to this region lived in a community in Hastings Township, West Monroe, Oswego County, NY called 'Little France'.
John moved his family to the Dubuque, Iowa area in 1852-1853. The 1856 Iowa State census shows the family farming in Washington twp, Dubuque County. He then settled in Harrison County, Iowa about 1857, living in St. John Township near Old St. John, a now defunct community just south of Missouri Valley. In the 1860 Federal Census for Harrison County, he was listed as a farmer in St. John Township, with an estate worth $1000 and personal property worth $200. He later bought property in nearby Boomer Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. John died in 4 December 1869 in Pottawattamie County. He was buried at St. Bridget’s Catholic Cemetery near Honey Creek, Iowa. John's son Victor bought the old Homestead in St. John’s Township where he raised his family and farmed the remainder of his life.
It is in Victor Tamisiea's biography in the 1891 History of Harrison County Iowa that it suggests the father of Jean Baptiste Tamisier was a physician and surgeon under Napolean Bonaparte, and that another member of the family was still a surgeon under the French government. Carrying on that tradition a number of Tamisiea and Tamiesie descendants in America became involved in the medical profession.

In some cases, estimates are given, and as with most research of this nature errors or discrepancies are probable.
