Descendants of John Meighen and Christena Watters

PART II - These are some of my notes related to a 5-generation chart for the descendants of John Meighen and Christena Watters. The children of John and Christena are given in Meighen family history to include Peter, Elsie, Hugh, John, Susanna, Abigail, Mary Ann, Sarah Jane, and Margaret. Also included in the article below are possible daughers Louisa and Catherine. If you would like further details, or would like to share notes, on these families please let me know.

Peter Meighen
Peter Meighen married Elizabeth Morrison and raised their family in and near Seneca township, Guernsey Co., Ohio, a township which became part of Noble County when it was formed in 1851. Peter is found farming in Seneca in 1830 as well as in 1850, raising a family which included Hugh, Belinda, Christiana, Mary, Catherine, John, James, Ann, and William. In 1854 Peter died in his early 50's, leaving widowed Elizabeth and youngest daughter Ann to move in with the Lawheads, i.e. her eldest daughter Belinda. Peter is buried at Coen Church Cemetery.

Hugh, son of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Hugh Meighen married Louisa Jane Lawhead in 1849 Guernsey County and established a farm in Lodi township, Athens County, Ohio in the 1850s. It was here they raised their family, and it was here the couple would spent the remainder of their days. Many of their children remained in Athens County raising their families as well. Hugh and Louisa had at least 7 children who married, Louisa (aka Eliza) passing way in 1901, and Hugh in 1908. They are buried at Asbury Cemetery in Athens County.

Belinda, daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Daughter Belinda (aka Melinda or Linda) married James Lawhead in 1849 Guernsey Co., Ohio and also moved to Lodi township in Athens County. This was the township her brother Hugh had established his farm. James Lawhead was a brother of Hugh's wife Louisa, both children of Elisha Lawhead. When Belinda's mother Elizabeth widowed, she came to live with the Lawheads in Athens County, along with Belinda's youngest sister Ann. The Lawheads later moved to Meigs County, Ohio, where widowed mother Elizabeth Meighen was again living with them in 1880. The Lawheads are known to have had 2 surviving children. Belinda is believed to be buried in Chester Cemetery, Meigs County, Ohio.

Christiana, daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen?
Christiana also seems to be a member of Peter's family, as suggested by the 1840 census. Christiana Meighen married William Thomas in 1846 Guernsey County, and they also moved to Lodi township, Athens County, by 1860. By the latter half of the 1860s the Thomas' moved to Carroll County, Missouri where it is thought that Christiana may have died by the early 1870s. They had a family of at least 9 children.

Mary, daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Mary Meighen was married to David Culbertson in 1856 Noble County, and was left a widow at an early age. They were not known to have any children, and Mary remained a widow for the remainder of her life. She lived with other members of the extended family, spending some time with brother John while he was living in Indiana. She lived for a number of years with her aunt, Mary Ann (Meighen) Bates. Mary died in 1912 Noble County and was buried at Coen Church Cemetery.

Catherine, daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Other members of Peter and Elizabeth's family included daughter Catherine who married Hugh Bates in 1856 Noble County. They raised their family in the Seneca township area and the two remained there the remainder of their lives. They had a large family of 12 children. Both Hugh and Catherine are buried at Bates Cemetery in Wills Creek, Noble Co., Ohio.

John, son of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Another son John married Sarah Jane Coen in 1857 Noble County, and they raised their family in the Seneca township area. They had 4 children, 2 of whom reached the age of marriage. John and Sarah were members of Mount Ephraim church, and spent the remainder of their days in the Seneca township area. John and Sarah are buried at First M.E. Church Cemetery, Coen, Noble County, Ohio.

James, son of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
James married Susannah Riggs in 1857 Noble county, and they followed other members of the family to Athens Co., Ohio. James and Susannah reared a family of 7 prior to making a move West. They are found in Grundy County, Missouri in the 1880s, and it was here that many family members were married and spent their remaining lives. James and Susannah are buried at Berry Cemetery, Galt, Grundy Co., Missouri.

Ann, daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
Ann was the youngest daughter of the family and was living with her widowed mother in 1860 Lodi township at the age of 19. If she married it is unknown to this author. A death date for Ann of September 18, 1871 is cited in family history.

William, son of Peter & Elizabeth Meighen
At the death of his father, William was about age 8 or 9. At first he likely lived with other members of the extended family, before becoming a laborer on farms in Guernsey county until reaching the age of maturity. It was here that he married Mary E Winnett in 1874 and, after a few short years in West Virginia, they returned to Ohio and raised a family of 4. William died in Guernsey County in 1903, his wife Mary in 1923. They are buried at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, Ohio.

Elsie Meighen
The early census points to one, or two daughters, of John & Christena who were born by 1805. A daughter named Elsie is mentioned in family history (who married Thomas DeLong), however records suggests it was a Catherine Meighen who married Thomas DeLong and Catherine was born about 1811. If there was a daughter named Elsie she may have been one of the older daughters.
There is one interesting possibility suggested by at least one family tree. This was an Elsie 'Meighen' who married Jesse Headley. In the Headley family trees her name is given to be 'Mahan'. The spelling of the Meighen name in early Ohio marriage records is variously given as Mehen, Meehen, Mehon, Mehin, and Mahen, so it is not unreasonable to believe Elsie 'Mahan' Headley may have been part of John and Christena's family. Elsie Headley was born about June 14, 1804, according to her gravestone in Marion Co., Illinois, and she was born in Pennsylvania.
Elsie and Jesse Headley initially raised their family in Malaga, Monroe Co., Ohio (on the border of 'old' Guernsey county). By 1850 Jesse & Elsie's family were living in Pee Pee township, Pike Co., Ohio. Both of these places were within a few miles of where Meighen families had also lived. Jesse and Elsie then relocated to Marion County, Illinois, where Elsie died on October 10, 1865.

Hugh Meighen

Adam was living as a divorcee in Noble County in 1910, and later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to live with his daughter Harriet. He died there in 1930.

John and Nancy's children included Perry Comodore, Sarah, Susannah, Peter, Mary Melissa, Nancy, Armelia, John, Rinehart, and Samuel.

Early accounts of Ezerias (Ezerias, Ezra) Rinehart or his younger brothers Enos and William are somewhat vague. If that is the case then Enos died August 06, 1864 at Vining Station, Georgia; and William died May 26, 1864 at New Hope Church, Georgia. Ezerias Rinehart appears to have married Carolina Haynes in July 1861 Ross County (or should this read 1867?). They had a son named James born in 1869. Catherine Meighen
A daughter named Elsie is mentioned in Meighen family history, "who married Thomas DeLong and was farming in Guernsey Co., Ohio in 1836 and possibly moved to Ross Co., Ohio." The author has located Ohio death certificates for four of the children of this Thomas DeLong and his wife's name was Catherine Meighen (born about 1811). Thomas and Catherine were likely married in the Guernsey County, Ohio area where Thomas is noted with land records in 1833, and appears to be in the 1840 Beaver township census there. The family of Thomas and Catherine also made the move to Huntington township, Ross County, Ohio (like other members of this Meighen family), and are found in the census there from 1850 through 1880. In line with other children of John and Christena Meighen, daughter Catherine was born in Pennsylvania to an Irish born father and Pennsylvania born mother. Both Thomas and Catherine DeLong lived past the 1880 census, and their family included John, James, Sarah J., Ceselia, William P., Thomas W., and Eliza Ellen. Catherine died in Ross County on February 20, 1883, at age 71y 7m 10d.

Moses died in 1925, and his wife remarried Bethel Bates, son of Bethel and Mary Ann (Meighen) Bates. Moses and Sarah are buried in Bates Hill Cemetery.

Margaret Ann Meighen
This author has a strong suspicion that daughter Margaret mentioned in Meighen family history was Margaret Ann Meighen who married Duncan Ross on Oct 26, 1843 Guernsey County, Ohio. Her name is listed as Mahen in the marriage record, consistent with other early Ohio Meighen marriages. Duncan may have been a brother/cousin of George Ross, who had married Margaret's sister Abigail Meighen. Soon after marriage Duncan is found farming in Huntington township, Ross County, Ohio; where other members of the extended Meighen-Bates-Glover families had also started farms of their own. Margaret and Duncan had a son Isaac and they appear to have had a daughter Mary Ellen Ross born in 1846 (she is cited as a daughter of Duncan Ross in her husband's biography). Margaret Ross died on March 29, 1849 and is buried at Pentecostal Church of Christ Cemetery in Ross County. Her stone reads age '28y6m21d, wife of Duncan'. Duncan remarried Elizabeth Green on March 03, 1850 in Ross County, Ohio, and they had at least six children. Duncan and Elizabeth, with many of the children, moved to Sangamon County, Illinois in the 1870s, where Elizabeth died in 1887. Duncan married again, to Anna Mullen in 1888, and he lived to be 89 years of age.

Isaac, son of Margaret Ann and Duncan Ross
Isaac served in company H, 63rd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Isaac is known to have married a couple of times. He married Rachel Rowe on April 02, 1866 in Ross Co., Ohio, and they had daughter Sarah Ellen Ross, born May 15, 1867, before they separated. Isaac then married widowed Mary Stansfield in 1873 Sangamon Co., IL, and they had twin sons and a daughter. Isaac also appears to have married Mary Zimmerman in 1890 Cook Co., Illlinois. Isaac was a blacksmith, living with his wife Mary in 1912 Chicago, as suggested by his father Duncan Ross' biography. Isaac died in Chicago on December 27, 1931.

Mary Ellen, daughter of Margaret Ann and Duncan Ross
Mary Ellen married James McCalister in 1864 Ross County, Ohio. They farmed a number of years in the Scioto and Huntington township areas where 8 of their 10 children were born. By the middle part of the 1880s, they moved to Sangamon Co., Illinois, where Duncan and Elizabeth had moved earlier. The couple spent the remainder of their lives in Sangamon County, where Mary Ellen died in 1918, and her husband in 1925. They are both buried at Mechanicsburg Cemetery in that county. Postscript: One family member suggests Mary Ross may have been a a daughter of Elizabeth Green from a previous relationship. If so, then Duncan Ross was her step-father and she adopted the Ross name.
